World Design Car Of The Year Is 101st Global Award For The Range Rover Evoque

Thursday, May 17th, 2012

world-design-car-of-the-year1-300x150Rolls-Royce, the global power systems company, has been awarded a £15 million contract by STX OSV to supply an extensive deck equipment package for an advanced anchor handling vessel to be operated by Iceman AS. The package, which is designed to improve operational safety, will include a new anchor handling frame (AHF) and a hydraulic anchor winch, which is capable of pulling 500 tonnes. It will also feature anchor handling cranes and systems to ensure controlled management of wires and chains when pulling heavy loads.

Arne Tande, Rolls-Royce, Senior Vice President - Offshore Deck Machinery said: “This latest contract cements Rolls-Royce’s position as the market leader in anchor handling equipment. We supply world leading technology which enables safer and more efficient operations in deep water oil fields.” As the exploration and production for oil and gas moves towards deeper waters, mooring lines become heavier, more difficult and more hazardous to handle. The new AHF is designed to reduce the handling forces and wire tension during anchor deployment and retrieval operations, while also minimising the human exposure to hazardous operating conditions.

The AHF is mounted at the stern of the vessel to ease the deployment and recovery of anchors. It makes it simpler to deck the anchor with correct orientation and without repeated efforts or assistance from other vessels. A design panel of five highly respected world design experts decided on the shortlist, which was then voted on by each of the 66 World Car Jurors. The jurors are all highly respected, top-level automotive journalists and come from 25 separate countries.

Juror Silvia Baruffaldi commented, “True to the concept car it derives from, it is a contemporary automotive design masterpiece. Besides not having equals on the markets, it is able to deliver the Land Rover DNA in a more compact, sporty body style. A premium product without the bad habit of showing off.”

The Range Rover Evoque’s award winning design is matched by its class-leading performance with dynamic and agile handling across all terrains plus innovative Range Rover technologies, including Terrain Response®, dual-view touch screen, surround camera system and an array of personalisation options to suit customer needs.

Hyundai Motor America Reports Best-Ever April Sales

Thursday, May 17th, 2012

Hyundai Motor America, the most fuel efficient automaker in the U.S., announced an all-time April sales record of 62,264 units, up 1 percent over last year’s all-time April record, and the second best sales month in company history after last month’s all-time record. With three fewer selling days this April versus last April, Hyundai’s average daily sales rate improved 12 percent.

“Never has a relatively flat sales month felt quite so good,” said Dave Zuchowski, Hyundai Motor America’s executive vice president of national sales. “We definitely felt some pullback from an overheated March sales pace but really picked up some momentum at the tail end of the month and finished with a flurry to set another all-time volume record. Vehicle availability continues to improve and our announcement just last night of the assembly plant expansion in Alabama will provide much needed production increases for our highly fuel efficient Sonata and Elantra sedans, while generating nearly 900 new jobs for the local economy. ”

In its first month of sales, the all-new Azera is off to a torrid start with sales up 399 percent over last April, while Hyundai’s family of RWD premium products, Genesis and Equus, continue to deliver outstanding sales results with volume up 36 percent over a year ago. In an ongoing effort to meet retail demand, business to fleet accounts continues to run at less than a 10 percent mix, amongst the lowest levels in the industry.

Hyundai achieved a corporate average fuel economy level of 37.1 MPG (27.9 MPG label value) in April, while selling 23,632 vehicles (38 percent of total sales) with 40 MPG window label highway fuel economy ratings. “April was a great month for us, but low availability of our 40-mpg highway Accent, Veloster, and Elantra, three of the hottest cars in the industry, definitely impacted our final sales result,” said John Krafcik, president and CEO of Hyundai Motor America. “We’ll continue to work through these constraints with actions like the addition of a third shift at our Alabama plant later this year, which will help feed unmet demand for Elantra and Sonata.”

Voting for Toyota’s 100 Cars for Good Opens This Morning at 10 am ET/7 am PT

Wednesday, May 16th, 2012

Toyota will open voting for the second year of 100 Cars for Good, a national philanthropic program that will award 100 cars to 100 nonprofits over the course of 100 consecutive days.

At Toyota, we appreciate what a big difference a new car or truck can make for organizations working to improve lives and strengthen communities across America,” said Jim Lentz, President and Chief Executive Officer of Toyota Motor Sales. Over the past 20 years, Toyota has contributed more than half a billion dollars to nonprofits throughout the U.S. 100 Cars for Good allows us to build on that commitment in new ways, putting the public in the ‘driver’s seat’ as we work to help community organizations make an even bigger impact. We wish all of this year’s finalists the best of luck.

The 500 finalists for 100 Cars for Good represent all 50 states and Washington, D.C. Profiles of all of this year’s finalists can be found at www.100carsforgood.com.

Winning nonprofits will be able to choose from one of six Toyota models: Camry Hybrid, Highlander SUV, Prius v hybrid, Sienna minivan, Sienna Mobility or Tundra full-sized pickup. A six-year, 100,000-mile powertrain warranty will also be provided for each vehicle, compliments of Toyota Financial Services.

To help participating nonprofits with their 100 Cars for Good campaigns – and to help them develop lasting digital marketing and social media skills that are critical to nonprofits – Toyota has provided each finalist with a toolkit that includes a digital video camera, training materials and free online advertising credits. The company is providing social media training support online to the finalists as well.

Initial test for Hankook tyres at Hockenheim

Wednesday, May 16th, 2012

When the first DTM race of the year gets underway at the legendary Hockenheimring on Sunday, the co-operation between Hankook as the exclusive tyre partner and the most popular international touring car series is entering its second season. After the successful premiere in 2011, Hankook’s engineers have constructed a largely new tyre that will prove itself for the first time in competition after many miles of testing. For the 2012-spec tyres that are significantly bigger and wider, the high-speed circuit near Hockenheim will be the litmus test.

An The Hockenheimring Baden-Wurttemberg is particularly notorious because of its high kerbstones. As the drivers are nearly always running over them at top speed, they put an enormous load on the tyre construction. However, Hankook’s engineers are confident that the tyres will again master the challenges at Hockenheim. After all, the experience and the know-how from the past season have been considered in the development of the new tyre generation. The current tyres are particularly bigger and wider than those used last year. With the sizes 300/680/R18 for the front and 320/710/R18 for the rear axle- meaning that even the 2012 front tyres are bigger than the rear tyres used in 2011- the new Ventus Race provide even more mechanical grip and performance, both as a slick and as a rain tyre. These are excellent conditions for ultra-fast laps at the Hockenheimring with its top-speed straights and the slower, yet very demanding cornering sections.

With the new development, the tyre manufacturer also succeeded in the difficult task of combining high performance and maximum safety. For drivers and teams, we are providing top performance at a constant high level of consistency and safety, like we had last year”, says James Kim, head of development and Team Manager Motorsport at Hankook Tire Europe, who from the German based headquarters is leading a team of more than ten development engineers.

Hankook BMW’s return into the DTM was an additional challenge for Hankook. Next to Audi and Mercedes-Benz, the individual requirements of a third premium car manufacturer now also have to be considered and taken into account. This made the development of the 2012-spec tyres to an even more delicate affair. However, co-operation was seamless, and was very effective with all three car manufacturers, James Kim emphasised. Norbert Haug, Mercedes-Benz’s head of motorsport immediately returned the compliment and already applauded during the press conference at the official DTM test days at the same venue: “Hankook is a reliable partner for the DTM, the tyres are suited for the challenges they have to deal with.< /P>
