NHTSA Investigation closed

Tuesday, January 31st, 2012

8Rüsselsheim - On Friday the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in the United States decided to close its investigation into the safety of the Chevrolet Volt which is similar to the Opel Ampera.

The NHTSA investigation concluded that “no discernible defect trend” existed and that “the vehicle modifications recently developed by General Motors reduce the potential for battery intrusion resulting from side impacts”. The decision by NHTSA is consistent with the results of GM’s internal testing and assessment.

Last year the Ampera already received the maximum five-star safety-rating from Euro NCAP. The enhancements developed by GM include modifications to the vehicle structure and the battery coolant system, which would provide the battery system with additional protection in a severe side impact.

The modifications in detail:

* Strengthening of an existing portion of the vehicle safety structure
* An additional sensor in the reservoir of the battery coolant system to monitor coolant levels
* A tamper-resistant bracket to the top of the battery coolant reservoir to help prevent potential coolant overfill

The enhancements are being incorporated into the Ampera manufacturing process as production resumes this month. Cars produced earlier will be retrofitted in Europe, before delivery to customers.

Honda’s Legendary Fireblade: Release Is Near, Price Is Here

Monday, January 30th, 2012

5As Australia waits with baited breath for the release of the 2012 Fireblade, Honda Australia announces the 20th anniversary model will retail at $18,490 for the standard, and $19,490 for the ABS model (MLRP). Due for Australian release in early February, the 2012 CBR1000RR will impress riders with advanced technology and even greater performance. It’s a Honda and true to its predecessors, superior handling and even greater rideability are paramount to this legendary release.

With the aim of improving handling and achieving unprecedented levels of riding stability, the 2012 Fireblade boasts changes to the front and rear suspension. The rear suspension has the additional benefit of the world’s first balance-free rear cushion made by Showa while the front features a telescopic inverted fork with an inner tube and a newly adapted Showa big piston front fork. The result of these suspension modifications is significantly improved stability in both damping force and shock-absorbing performance, leading to improved traction and stability in the new CBR1000RR.

A newly designed, 12-spoke, lightweight aluminium cast wheel has been adopted for both the front and rear. Due to the increased number of spokes, rigidity has been further evened out for load received in all directions from the tyre contact points which offers improved manoeuvring feel.

Every generation of the Honda Fireblade has been characterised by a look of speed and dynamism, for 2012 these qualities have been further developed to highlight the bike’s racing image. With a line-beam headlight and air intake shapes adding even greater sharpness, the new CBR1000RR offers a novel and intrepid front face.

A new all-digital LCD meter design offers a truly racing inspired image offering excellent visibility and high functionality and with a 5-level display, the REV indicator linked to a digital tachometer instantly transmits accurate information to the rider.

The lightweight and compact, liquid-cooled DOHC inline 4-cylinder engine features a displacement of 999cc. The Programmed Dual Sequential Fuel Injection System (PGM-DSFI) was revisited and enhanced for 2012 to make a sports model that is even easier and more fun to handle.

Digital future: Audi at the DLD Conference

Tuesday, January 24th, 2012

Audi is playing a part in the DLD Conference in Munich. Representatives from industry, science and culture discuss the digital future during the three-day conference, which draws international articipants.Digitization is accelerating social change as well as transforming our cities and our mobility,” explained Rupert Stadler, Chairman of the Board of Management of AUDI AG, at the DLD in Munich. In his keynote address, he outlined the strategy of “Audi connect”– the intelligent network between the car, driver, Internet, infrastructure and other cars, and therefore the path to networked mobility.

Audi already offers many of these features in its cars: starting with navigation with graphics from Google Earth or Google Street View and Audi online traffic information and the voice-controlled point-of-interest search, to assistance systems that help drivers reach their destination safely and without stress. The car automatically maintains its distance from other cars in stop-and-go traffic, for instance, or warns the driver when he unintentionally drives out of his lane.

Stadler’s speech also provided a look into the future: “A digitized car that communicates with other vehicles and the environment might one day be able to do without traffic lights.” The vision behind this is one of complete networking that could also make piloted driving possible.

Heinrich Wefing, editor of the weekly newspaper “Die Zeit,” moderated the roundtable with Jürgen Mayer H. (winner of the Audi Urban Future Award 2010), Franciscus van Meel (Head of Electric Mobility Strategy at Audi), Christian Gärtner (Managing Director of Stylepark AG and curator of the Audi Urban Future Initiative) and Mark Wigley (Dean of the Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation at Columbia University in New York and Director of the research project “Experiments in Motion” as part of the Audi Urban Future Initiative).

As the exclusive automotive sponsor, Audi is providing the DLD shuttle service, which consists of 40 A8 L cars, from January 22-24. Audi supported last year’s DLD spinoff event, DLD women.
