S 1000 RR: The New Generation of Drag Bike

Friday, July 30th, 2010

USA - The dynamic and powerful S 1000 RR has stunned the motorcycle world with its class-leading power in a package that can dominate on the track and also be equally at home on the road.

In the USA, American Brock Davidson saw a very different potential in the RR. The class-leading power and dynamic chassis could well be turned into a very potent weapon in a class of racing that is measured in micro components of time – drag racing.

Brock Davidson heads up Brock’s Performance in Dayton, Ohio. He founded this company in 2002 with the aim of creating engineering excellence for both road and track. Brock’s performance-enhancing products like BST carbon fibre wheels, titanium exhaust system and the extended swingarms have helped create a unique BMW quarter-mile sprinter. As well as the extended wheelbase bike there is the ‘Stock’ version. Depending on the rules of the competition, either or both can have track time over a weekend.

Both produce 203hp (at the rear wheel) with their Dynojet PCV fuel injection module and modified mapping to match Brock’s beautifully produced exhaust system. It is not only in the way this machine looks that the BMW impresses. The standard version has hit the finish line at 8.95 seconds while the 1663.7 mm wheelbase bike has managed a very impressive 8.497 seconds in the ¼ with both reaching trap speeds approaching 257 km/h. The long-wheelbase bike also boasts a 0-200 km/h reading of just 5.2 seconds!

The first outing for the Brock’s Performance RR was at an AMA meeting in Michigan, with Ryan Schnitz in the seat. The extended swingarm model had the crowd stunned. Here was the fastest bike of its class in the world and this was its first trip up the strip! For Brock it was a vindication of his original hunch:

“The BMW has a better power-to weight ratio than any bike we have ever run and we can see it not only grabbing the headlines but riders looking for performance – be it on the drag strip, track or indeed the road. There is no better way to develop specialist parts than in competition,” said Brock at the end of a successful weekend.

The stunning debut had four-times AMA National Champion, Keith Dennis signing on as team rider and he had the standard wheelbase version in action at a recent event in Alabama where, again, the RR stood out.

“We are going to further develop the BMW with nitrous injection for ‘Real Street’ competition and do more work on engine hard-part development after we see what it can take in pure stock form,” says Brock. “So far, the engine has been stronger than anything we have been able to throw at it from a normally aspirated standpoint. We have ‘torture tested’ both of these bikes like no others on the dyno and racetracks during accelerated product development and performance testing, and they are extremely impressive. Every component has been engineered to the highest standards, but nitrous oxide is an entirely different beast that was not in the original BMW design criteria, so it’s our job as an aftermarket manufacturer to take it from here to please the stupid fast crowd,” said Brock, with an eye to the future.

It is not only on the strip where heads are turned. “We are always very busy at our display area, where the BMW always creates a storm of interest. We were at the recent World Superbike meet at Salt Lake City in the BMW Motorrad area and did that grab us some interest!” said Brock.

Drag racing might not have been on the BMW Motorrad agenda but thanks to Brock Davidson the S 1000 RR now has a new area of motor sport in which to display its unique style and dynamic power.

Mitsubishi’s all-new ASX arrives in Australia

Friday, July 30th, 2010

Australia - Mitsubishi Motors Australia Limited (MMAL) has announced the arrival of its all-new compact vehicle, the ASX, or Active Smart Crossover. Available in either two- or all-wheel drive configurations, the ASX is a milestone vehicle for Mitsubishi, introducing the company’s firstever diesel engined passenger vehicle to the Australian market.

Launching the vehicle, MMAL’s president and chief executive officer, Masahiko Takahashi, said the company was delighted to add another passenger vehicle to its range.“The all-new ASX will provide a logical bridge between our popular Lancer and Outlander line-ups, and ensure all our Mitsubishi customers have an even greater range of vehicles to choose from.”

“Significantly, the ASX will enable us to compete in the new, fast-growing two-wheel drive compact SUV market segment, and allow us to attract new customers to the Mitsubishi brand,” Takahashi said.
As a two-wheel drive, the ASX 2WD will be offered with a lively, fuel-efficient 110kW/197Nm 2.0-litre petrol engine that drives the front wheels through a choice of either five-speed manual gearbox or smooth stepless Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT).

The mid range ASX 4WD introduces not only Mitsubishi’s first-ever diesel engine for a passenger car in Australia, but also the most fuel efficient in its class. This has been achieved through the world’s first application of variable valve timing to a passenger car diesel engine with the all-new DiD engine featuring Mitsubishi’s proprietary MIVEC system. With a capacity of 1.8-litres and maximum outputs of 110kW of power and 300Nm of torque, the turbodiesel engine is mated to a six-speed manual gearbox resulting in an official ADR 81/01 fuel consumption of just 5.9 litres per 100 kilometres and CO2 emissions of only 154 grams per kilometre.

The 2.0-litre petrol engine with CVT and the 1.8-litre diesel engine with six-speed manual transmission are offered as standard on both the ASX 4WD variant and the top of the range ASX Aspire.
As the latest vehicle developed from MMC’s “Project Global” mid-size platform, the ASX blends Lancer’s passenger car on-road attitude with Outlander’s commanding driving position and the convenience of its clever “AWC” electronically-controlled Four-Wheel Drive system on relevant models.

The design of the Mitsubishi ASX is closely based on the “Compact Dynamism” styling blueprint of the Concept-cX crossover vehicle, that was first seen at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 2007. Widely acclaimed for its smooth profile and sloping curves, the ASX was one of the first vehicles to break away from the chunky look typically associated with SUVs. Sporting Mitsubishi’s signature “Jet Fighter” grille, the ASX remains faithful to the original Concept-cX styling direction combining the characteristics of both SUVs and passenger vehicles into a stylish and versatile city vehicle.

The interior appointments of the ASX are designed to complement the sophisticated lines of the exterior. Quality fabrics and textured materials generate an ambience that suggests “dynamism within simplicity,” with particular attention paid to the soft trim for areas touched by the occupants.

Safety is always a high priority with all Mitsubishi vehicles, and in the ASX, it reaches new heights. Based on Mitsubishi’s acclaimed RISE (Reinforced Impact Safety Evolution) structure, the ASX combines an extensive array of safety features fitted standard across the range including ASTC (Active Stability Control with Traction Control), Hill Start Control system, ABS, Electronic Brake Distribution, Brake Assist, and seven airbags, including driver and passenger front, side and curtain, and driver knee airbag.

The three-model lineup of ASX 2WD, ASX 4WD and ASX Aspire are all comprehensively equipped for superb comfort and convenience with the ASX 2WD designed to perfectly complement a city lifestyle. Standard features include fully automatic climate control air-conditioning with air filter, cruise control, front and rear electric windows and exterior mirrors, electric tailgate opener, AM/FM radio/CD/MP3 player with auxiliary and USB inputs, variable intermittent windscreen wipers, tilt and telescopic steering column adjustment and 16-inch alloy wheels (17-inch on the Aspire).

A Convenience Pack combining Bluetooth 2.0 handsfree phone connectivity with steering wheel mounted controls, steering wheel mounted audio controls, chrome muffler tip and rear parking sensors is optionally available on all two-wheel drive variants.

For those who wish to venture off the beaten track, the four-wheel drive ASX is the vehicle of choice. In addition to the Mitsubishi AWD electronically controlled four-wheel drive system, the ASX 4WD models also gain front fog lamps, Bluetooth 2.0 handsfree phone connectivity with steering wheel mounted controls, steering wheel mounted audio controls, and rear parking sensors.

The top of the line all-wheel drive ASX Aspire combines all the safety, versatility, and comfort features of the ASX 4WD and adds a number of luxury features that are rarely found in this class of vehicle. These include leather seats with seat heating for driver and front passenger, power driver’s seat, keyless operating system with a one-touch start, rain sensing automatic windscreen wipers and dusk sensing automatic lights, 17-inch alloy wheels, privacy glass, and chrome accents for the radiator grille and belt line moulding.

The ASX Aspire also features a premium Rockford Fosgate audio system with nine speakers and the Mitsubishi Multi Communication System (MMCS), which includes satellite navigation, DVD with video input, Bluetooth 1.0 handsfree phone connectivity with steering wheel mounted controls, iPod integration and control, and reversing camera. The MMCS also allows you to customise a number of vehicle functions, including wiper control, auto unlock functions and climate control.

Masahiko Takahashi is very optimistic about the prospects for the ASX in the Australian market. “The design blueprint for the original Concept-cX was to combine the best attributes of both passenger vehicles and SUVs, and the Mitsubishi designers have nailed it.

“And our customers agree. The ASX has received terrific reviews from both Japanese and European media, and the initial sales response has been fantastic.
“This is a great vehicle – good looking, versatile, with the availability of a fantastic new diesel engine - and the all-wheel drive variants give you the opportunity to really get up and go,” Takahashi said.

Mitsubishi provides its industry leading warranty on all ASX vehicles, including a comprehensive five year/130,000 km whole vehicle warranty, backed up by its 10 year/160,000 km powertrain warranty and a five year/130,000 kilometre roadside assistance package.

Opel ecoFLEX Experience: Europe’s Greenest Driver Found!

Friday, July 30th, 2010

Malmö.: Opel sought Europe’s Greenest Driver and Portugal’s António Gonçalves proved worthy of the title this weekend. Under the motto: “Green Driver: Wanted!” Opel initiated a two-month long ecoFLEX Experience competition to raise awareness that proper eco-conscious driving techniques – coupled with the right vehicles – can go far in reducing CO2 emissions.

Opel first whittled down a playing field of nearly 70,000 competitors to 20 contestants – one from each participating country. They met this past weekend at Sturup Raceway near Malmö, Sweden for the grand finale. After two days of suspenseful action, the 25-year-old ecoFLEX Experience champion accepted a symbolic key for the grand prize, one of the very first electric Opel Ampera, which is on schedule for production next year. The extended-range electric vehicle – the first series car of its kind in Europe — will be on sale in Europe at the end of 2011.

“I definitely wanted to win because I wanted that Ampera,” said a proud and happy Gonçalves. “That’s why my main focus was to drive as consistently as possible.”

The second- and third-place winners also have reason to celebrate. The runner-up, fuel-saving champion Yakup Pelit from Denmark, won an Opel Astra 1.3 CDTI ecoFLEX. The 70 kW/95 hp compact car needs just 4.1 liters of diesel per 100 km, which results in exemplary CO2 emissions of 109 grams per kilometer.

Number three, the Finn Keijo Tapio Leppävuori, can show off his eco-friendly driving style in a Corsa 1.3 CDTI ecoFLEX that features an average consumption of only 3.7 liters per 100 km (98 g/km CO2).

Finale in Sweden highlighted of fuel-saving techniques

The participants had to demonstrate their fuel-saving abilities in four disciplines at the Swedish Sturup Raceway. The first was a typical city tour in the Corsa with a lot of starts, stops and varied speed limits. The overall winner of this event, Gonçalves, achieved an average consumption of 4.25 liters diesel per 100 km. Runner up Leppävuori burned 4.41 l/100 km and the third place winner, Urban Gostencnik of Slovenia used 4.56 l/100 km.

Smooth cruising against the clock was on the agenda with the top-of-the-line Insignia event, with Denmark’s Pelit averaging 4.31 l/100 km. Portugal’s Gonçalves took second place with 4.61 l/100 km, while Sweden’s Jesper Forsberg placed third with 4.68 l/100 km. The Meriva had only a half liter of diesel in its tank, and the best participant in this challenge, Forsberg successfully covered 18.13 km on this fuel ration.

With 1.6 liters of fuel in the Astra’s tank, the aim of the fourth race was to cover 20 laps as quickly as possible – a deed requiring particular skill in driving fast, but still being able to cross the finish line. The overall winner, Slovenia’s Gostencnik, managed this in just 43 minutes and 19 seconds. Second place was Pelit with 43”27’. Third place was Italy’s Fabio Bochicchio, clocking in at 43”30’.

At the end of the weekend, António Gonçalves found the best balance between fuel-saving techniques and a speedy driving style, with an overall consumption average of just 3.95 l/100 km. This put him ahead of the other country winners, proving that environmentally friendly driving can be fun – and profitable.

The overwhelming interest in the Opel/Vauxhall ecoFLEX Experience exceeded all expectations. In Germany alone, almost 19,000 people registered to participate, while in the UK, Turkey, France and Italy over 5,000 participants registered in each country. To date, the ecoFLEX Experience website has had around 2.5 million visits.

Green Driving – today and tomorrow

The overwhelming attention also underlines the growing importance and popularity of economical cars. Opel offers a varied portfolio of ecoFLEX models, ranging from economical gasoline versions to low-CO2 diesels and alternative fuel variants including Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) and Compressed Natural Gas (CNG).

The ecoFLEX Experience grand prize, the Opel Ampera, showcases the brand’s commitment to increasingly offer environmentally friendly engine technologies in the future.

The Opel Ampera extended-range electric vehicle will be the first emission-free, electrically driven car in Europe suitable for everyday driving.
